Volunteer with us

Volunteers are brilliant! We know your time is precious, and we truly value those of you who commit a few hours a week to working with young people. For young people, knowing that members of their community are there for them, understand their issues, and want to help them excel, helps springboard them into the next chapter of their lives.

Once you have completed the Expression Of Interest Form our Volunteering Coordinator will be in touch with you.

What works for you?

Adult volunteers (18+)

If you are 18 and over you can apply to become one of our adult volunteers. This is a phenomenal opportunity where you quickly see the impact of your time with young people.

You can apply to volunteer with your nearest or preferred Space Youth Centre. We have 9 physical locations across Devon meaning there’s bound to be one nearby!

For this role you will be provided with all the information and guidance required to carry out your volunteering effectively and confidently. You will also receive ongoing support, training and developmental opportunities to ensure you feel professionally equipped in your role.

Your views matter to us as well - with regular supervision you are able to feed back and have your views taken into account in the wider charity.

We aim to provide an anti-oppressive, diverse, and safe environment for all our colleagues, volunteers and young people.

Young volunteers

Maybe you’re a young person, or you know a young person, who would be AMAZING at helping others. Our Youth Volunteers are an incredible bunch of young people who show us how things should be done!

But why volunteer?

You get to do things your way - leading activities, coming up with creative projects, and helping other young people.

You’re a trusted face, someone others want to talk to and ask advice from.

What’s in it for you? Well apart from having a brilliant time doing all the things that your youth centre has to offer, and helping other young people feel great, you get a load of benefits too.

You will build your skills, confidence, and can even get qualifications. Whether you just want to be a bigger part of your community or top up the right experiences to wow your future bosses, this is a great way to go.

This is where it all happens! Maybe you’re a jack of all trades and you want to pitch in and help out wherever needed. Perhaps you enjoy a varied role that could see you in the kitchen one week and in the sports hall the next. Maybe you want to support workers to deliver curriculum based activities, or be a listening ear for young people who are struggling. If in doubt, choose open access!

Volunteering oppurtunites in sessions:

Cooking

At our centres we regularly run cooking activities with young people. You don’t need to be a chef to volunteer in the kitchen, just keen to help young people develop an important life skill, support them to follow recipes and adhere to kitchen safety. We can even offer you food hygiene training.

Locations: Bideford, Barnstaple, Okehampton, Tiverton, Exmouth, Totnes and Newton Abbot.

Sports

Are you good at organising games, breaking people into teams, explaining rules? Could you be a good referee? Maybe you just like to get stuck in to make up the numbers? You don’t need to be super sporty to help out with sporting activities.

Locations: Newton Abbot, Exeter, Tiverton, Barnstaple and Bideford.

Music

Do you have any music skills you could pass on to young people? Perhaps you can play a few drum beats, teach some guitar chords, or show someone how to read music. Maybe you could coordinate a group of young people to form a band? These are some examples of the skills we need in our music rooms.

Locations: Newton Abbot, Totnes, Tiverton, Okehampton, Exmouth, Barnstaple and Bideford.

Art

Art and creative activities can be an excellent way to cope with the stresses of life, and have fun at the same time. We offer art based activities in all of our centres, and always welcome those with the creative skills to make it happen.

Locations: Newton Abbot, Exeter, Totnes, Exmouth, Tiverton, Okehampton, Barnstaple and Bideford

Gardening

Some of our centres have gardens, and in the warmer months we are always looking for people to come and share their gardening knowledge with young people, and help improve our outside spaces.

Locations: Okehampton, Totnes and Barnstaple.

1-1 Mentoring Volunteering

Can you dedicate an hour a week to supporting a young person on a 1-1 basis? Depending on your skills and the young person’s needs, this may involve being a listening ear, teaching them important life skills, doing some sports, doing some art based activities or music, or helping them to improve confidence. You would be offered the appropriate training to carry out this role, and always have support on hand from youth workers.

Events / Fundraising Volunteering

Are you unable to make a commitment to regular work in a youth centre, but still want to support Space? We are always looking for volunteers to help out at events and with fundraising! This may involve talking to members of the community about Space and what we offer young people, and a small amount of bucket shaking.
